【ADF Web Magazine】“WAR REQUIEM I” by Kunihiko Katsumata at KOKI ARTS

"WAR REQUIEM I", a solo exhibition by artist and photographer Kunihiko Katsumata is been held at KOKI ARTS for 26 July to 23 August, 2025. Timed to coincide with the symbolic year of 2025—100 years since the beginning of the Shōwa era and 80 years after the end of World War II—the exhibition reconfigures and presents two of Katsumata’s long-running series: To Iwo Jima, which centers on the island of Iwo Jima, and Remains, which features photographs of atomic-bombed trees in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Café Gentil is a striking space with its ceiling and walls painted in Yves Klein Blue-a color rarely used so boldly in restaurants. The owner explains that he chose the shade as a tribute to the great French artist, fitting for his French-themed café, which offers only French coffee and ingredients. Bright mid-century furniture, playful accessories, and abundant greenery add warmth and energy to the deep blue interior. Chef The Duc Ngo, known for his popular Asian restaurants across Berlin, recently opened Manon Brasserie Nouvelle inside Roomers Berlin, a renovated five-star hotel with over a century of history. The interior, inspired by Serge Gainsbourg’s song “Manon,” is described as sweet and feminine-evoking a wistful chanson of love and hate.

AD FUTURE: An Unbounded Social Space Beyond Time

To Chaoshan contemporary artist Mr. Zheng Shaowen, whose “Yingge Dance” Series anchors the design in local cultural identity. To Lin Xu of Matrix Electronic Band, for composing “Clash with Fate”—an electrifying track that fuses the heroic shouts of Yingge with modern beats, capturing the tension and fusion of tradition and modernity. To Chaoyang Haixing Yingge Dance Troupe and YANA from Latvia, whose joint performance embodies our vision of cultural collision and convergence. And to video production team Flight Film and photographer Ouyang Yun, for their emotive lens that unfolds the cinematic interplay of time and space.

Catherine Commons is an apartment-style residential community for the Cornell University off-campus student population in the Collegetown district of Ithaca, New York, designed by ikon.5 architects. The project consists of six residential buildings located on two adjacent sites: Catherine North and Catherine South. Prominently lining the main artery of College Avenue and gracefully stepping down in height towards residential neighborhoods and the City of Ithaca, Catherine Commons includes studio, 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartments, all with private bedrooms and bathrooms and access to retail and recreational amenities including a fitness center and indoor and outdoor community courtyards.

At Gagosian Mayfair in London, I Do Not Come to You By Chance marks Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo’s first solo exhibition in the city. The exhibition was spatially designed by architect Glenn DeRoche of DeRoche Projects, continuing a series of collaborations with Boafo that includes the writers’ and curators’ residency dot.ateliers|Ogbojo in Accra and the Volta Pavilion, constructed using reclaimed timber from Ghana’s Volta Region.Approaching the exhibition as a “mode of translation,” DeRoche reinterprets the communal and cultural context underpinning Boafo’s work into spatial form. Two architectural interventions anchor the exhibition: Courtyard Pavilion in Gallery 1 and Nkyinkyim in Gallery 2. Both spaces treat architecture not as a neutral backdrop but as a medium that amplifies the themes found in Boafo’s portraiture—strength, resilience, and collective identity.
