Phornphong Yanyadech, the winner of the ASA International Design Competition 2019 sponsored by the Association of Siamese Architects Nationals (ASA), visited Japan and shares his research report. This invitation was jointly planned by NPO Aoyama Design Forum (ADF) and GARDE Co, Ltd. It was postponed due to the Corona Crisis and realized only after several years.
In this report, Mr.Phornphong Yanyadech considers that the phenomenon of "Japanization" or "Japaneseness" can be observed in all aspects of Thai society, especially in Bangkok and other cities in Japan. It is said that the “hybrid” ways of Japan and Thailand have emerged as a result of this phenomenon, which has been seamlessly integrated into Thai culture.
In the report, he summarizes the relationship between Bangkok, Thailand and Japan in a timeline, looking back at the cultural background and differences between the two countries, as well as the history of the influx of Japanese cultural technology into Thailand. In addition to Tokyo, which he visited this time, he also takes up Kyoto, Kobe, Okayama/Kurashiki, Takamatsu, Naoshima, and Teshima and introduces the historical background of the city/region, Tadao Ando and other famous Japanese architects, and the architecture that is still in use today. In addition, the climate of each region and the buildings typical of the region were introduced. The history and subcultures that have developed in urban development are also presented through materials and photographs. It is a report that will awaken new fantasies by looking at the hybrid new values that connect the history of Japan and Thailand to the present.
Thank you very much for your excellent report. We look forward to seeing you again.
