ADF Art Gallery Project Vol.34: HARUNA SHIKATA Solo Exhibition “Overwrite”

From August 1 (Fri) to August 9 (Sat), 2025, the solo exhibition “Overwrite” by artist HARUNA SHIKATA will be held at GARDE Gallery in Tokyo.

_Concept_
The exhibition “Overwrite” centers around the concept of “overwriting information, emotions, and personal experiences.” Inspired by a fundamental question—“What can we do positively while respecting the memories and events engraved in our minds and hearts?”—SHIKATA presents a body of work that explores new possibilities for creativity in contemporary society.

Rather than being bound by past experiences or the emotional triggers caused by an overflow of information, SHIKATA proposes “Overwrite” not as an act of erasure, but as a positive “editing” or “processing” of these memories. The artist visualizes the process of overwriting memories—layering new meaning onto old experiences—through mixed-media artworks.

_Artworks_
Using recorded texts, illustrations, drawings, and photographs as a base, SHIKATA blends digital and analog techniques, repeatedly editing and processing images before applying materials through painting. Through this practice, she creates a unique visual language in her two-dimensional mixed-media works. The overlapping and reconstruction of fragmented memories are rendered visible through her art. We invite you to experience this layered visual journey.

_Artist Profile: HARUNA SHIKATA_
Working under the theme of “Overwrite,” HARUNA SHIKATA explores the emotional and informational memories accumulated in the brain. While such memories can serve a positive purpose, they can also act as negative triggers. Based on her own experiences, SHIKATA believes these memories persist as unupdated data stored in the mind.

Her practice involves overwriting these memories—intentionally or unconsciously accumulated—by editing and transforming photographs, fonts, illustrations, and drawings associated with her experiences. She uses UV inkjet printing on materials like silver leaf, then adds hand-painted layers with various materials, effectively creating new entities from old memories.

By observing things from a present perspective and reconstructing them, SHIKATA creates entirely new meanings. Through this ongoing process, she seeks to face painful or lingering memories and move forward toward a more enriched future.
