ADF (NPO Aoyama Design Forum) is pleased to present the 46th installment of the ADF Art Gallery Project, “peripheral portraits,” a solo exhibition by photographer and artist Hiroaki Konishi, on view at GARDE Gallery in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo, from August 7 to August 26, 2026. An opening reception will be held on August 7, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and all visitors are welcome to attend.
Throughout his artistic practice, Konishi has directed his attention toward those who exist on the margins of society—subjects that fall outside the mainstream, remain unnoticed, are overlooked, or are marginalized. He has also explored the physicality of living beings that exists beyond the realm of language, using photography as a medium to investigate their expressive potential. In this exhibition, Konishi significantly expands this perspective, inviting viewers to reconsider the world through a new lens.

As he engages with forgotten places and memories, as well as the quiet voices of children and animals, his gaze gradually extends toward invisible presences. Through the artist’s attempt to perceive what cannot ordinarily be seen, the notion of the photographic portrait is gradually redefined, awakening landscapes and sensations that many of us have lost sight of as we grow older.

The exhibition features a new body of work imbued with a sense of tension and subtle unease, where dreams and reality appear to intersect. These works are deeply rooted in the artist’s personal memories while resonating with a broader sense of universality. The exhibition also includes Konishi’s first video work, presented alongside the photographic series to create an atmosphere charged with an unsettling presence. Visitors are invited to experience this immersive new series firsthand.
