T10A Pavilion: An Exhibition Pavilion Built from 40,000 Recycled Plastic Bags in Hanoi

T10A Pavilion, a public exhibition pavilion designed by Hanoi-based architectural studio ODDO architects, has been completed and opened to the public in Hanoi, Vietnam. The project explores an innovative approach to sustainability through material reuse and community participation, positioning waste as a valuable architectural resource.

From Waste to Architecture — Reusing 40,000 Plastic Bags

Vietnam generates approximately 25 million tons of household waste every year. T10A Pavilion was designed as an architectural response to this reality. The primary construction material of the pavilion is discarded plastic shopping bags from everyday life. With the support of local residents and numerous volunteers, more than 40,000 used plastic bags were collected, recycled, and transformed into architectural materials.

A Public Pavilion for Exhibition and Learning

T10A Pavilion functions not only as an exhibition space for architectural works but also as an educational platform that demonstrates the potential of recycled materials. Through direct spatial experience, visitors are invited to reflect on sustainable architecture, circular design, and new possibilities for material reuse.

Connecting Hanoi’s Craft Traditions with Contemporary Architecture

The design draws inspiration from Hanoi’s long-standing craft traditions and informal local construction practices. Recycled plastic panels are combined with traditional handmade Vietnamese paper, Giấy Dó, and supported by a lightweight steel framework. The pavilion bridges past and future by linking local craftsmanship with contemporary approaches to sustainability.

A Collective Creation with Children

During the design process, children from a local kindergarten were invited to decorate the paper domes with their own drawings of the city. Their participation added a human and joyful layer to the pavilion, transforming it into more than a building and into a collective artwork created together with the community.

Dynamic Light, Color, and Spatial Experience

The pavilion is composed of three wing-like roofs, each representing a different exhibition theme: Housing, Interior, and Sustainability. Semi-transparent recycled plastic panels filter daylight during the day, creating colorful and shifting shadows, while at night the pavilion glows softly like a lantern within the urban landscape.

Extending the Life Cycle of Materials

After the exhibition period, the recycled plastic roof panels are planned to be reused and transformed into new design objects such as bags. In this way, T10A Pavilion demonstrates a sustainable approach that considers the full life cycle of materials, even beyond the temporary nature of the structure.

T10A Pavilion is not only a structure but also a statement that reconsiders waste as a resource and questions the role of architecture in shaping a more sustainable future.
