Located in Penang, this cafeteria within a manufacturing complex needs expansion to accommodate a dining seating capacity of 1000, along with a proper kitchen and servery area. The objective is to offer a dining space that allows the workforce to take a break, enhancing focus and concentration, while also providing an opportunity for employees to mentally reset. The designs and planning must adhere to client requirements, encompassing safety, environmental concerns, hygiene, access, clearances, maintainability, and constructability. The design should focus on creating a conducive and safe layout for the movement of people, materials, and equipment, taking into account ergonomic needs for both construction and maintenance. The overall planning should ensure a smooth flow, especially during peak hours.

Their goal is to craft an organic environment that blurs the boundary between human-made and natural elements, instilling a sense of spaciousness and rejuvenation through clean lines and natural expressions. The space exudes a serene and therapeutic atmosphere, thanks to its neutral color palette. In the expansive cafeteria, the design team has skillfully defined various seating areas, offering diners flexibility and options to choose their preferred corners based on their mood, ensuring a personalized touch through design. In a world transitioning into an era of wellness and mindfulness post-pandemic, the significance of interaction becomes more apparent. This cafeteria aims to provide a revitalizing space where office staff can reset and unwind, appreciating life's small pleasures through spatial interactions.

Creativity

Smooth and well-planned, the recently renovated and expanded Manufacturing Complex Cafeteria fulfills the criteria of being empathetic, integrative, and emotionally resonant with its primary users—the office building's workforce. The idea of introducing a "dining in the park" concept to the project aligns with our goal of establishing an indoor urban dining park within a minimalist architectural framework. This concept promotes the idea of users taking breaks during work hours, offering a brief reset for enhanced focus and concentration. As individuals reconnect with nature, they can also enjoy lunch breaks in a serene space, promoting rest and relaxation.

Spatial Features

The layout was planned to mimic the park environment and ambiance to the indoor space, with an eclectic furniture layout setting to cater various seating groups. This 16,000 sqft dining space divided by multiple pavilions into several seating zones and serving counters, with an outdoor extension dining hall approximately with 9000 sqft area that surrounded by lush landscape. An open courtyard created and set in between the existing dining hall and the new extension block to blur the indoor and outdoor space within the cafeteria. Seating areas designed to resemble outdoor park settings within the cafeteria. Incorporate elements like wooden benches, picnic tables, and artificial greenery to create a park-like ambiance. Natural materials, textures, and earthy material palette are widely used in the space to evoke a sense of being in nature and to create a soothing and refreshing atmosphere.

The cafeteria additionally offers a private dining room that can be partitioned off like a pavilion

Design Functionality

Fluidity is name of the game as it creates a dynamic flow within the newly extended complex. Through different modular components such as the two-sided seatings and the multiple islands, these fluid elements stand out as the centre of attention. Its fluid design creates a dynamic and inviting atmosphere, encouraging people to gather, interact, and appreciate the space. Abundant greenery, plants, and natural elements injected throughout to soften the space and giving a lively and energizing outdoor dining vibe allows mind to recharge and refocus.
