The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum hosts the special exhibition "Ueno no Soko" from Saturday, July 22, to Monday, Oct. 9. "Begin, Begin," by Tamana Araki. New York-based Tamana Araki (1970-) continues her wide range of artistic activities. The exhibition features poetic prints and three-dimensional works that have been exhibited both in Japan and overseas, installations created in collaboration with children from various countries, including Ukraine, and picture books created in collaboration with the indigenous people of Mexico. In addition to more than 90 works ranging from early to recent works, including installations in which viewers participate, as well as new large-scale installations inspired by the venue "Memories of Ueno," this is the artist's first retrospective exhibition. Towada Art Center "Liu Jianhua: Pouring the Hollow"

Towada Art Center hosts the solo exhibition of Shanghai-based artist Liu Jianhua (Liu Zhenhua) for the first time in Japan from June 24 (Sat) to November 19 (Sun) 2023. Raised in Jingdezhen, the birthplace of porcelain, Liu learned to carve after working as a craftsman in a porcelain workshop. Based on the theme of economic and social change in China and the problems that accompany it, he creates three-dimensional works and installations in clay, stone, glass, and ceramics.
The main exhibition space of this shows feature Abandonment (2001-2015), which is made of porcelain from everyday objects such as plastic bottles and shoes. Most of the everyday items we use are abandoned, break down, and become trash after they have served their temporary function. This work gives us a sense that we are surrounded by materials that do not return to the soil, and that we continue to accumulate things that cannot be disposed of. In addition, there is the recent work "Pagoda" (2021-2022 ), in which only the mouth and neck of bottles and jars are cut out, and a floating pillow that echoes the form of the museum's permanent exhibition "Traces" (2010).

Dates: June 24 (Saturday) to November 19 (Sunday), 2023
Opening hours: 9:00am-5:00pm ( Last admission 30 minutes before
closing )
Closed : Mondays ( closed on national holidays)
