Dezeen Awards 2021 Winners Revealed

The winners of the Dezeen Awards 2021 have been announced. The winning projects and studios were announced in a series of video shows from November 22, 2021 to November 24. Each show announced the winners in each category as well as the overall project winner in that area. The NPO Aoyama Design Forum (ADF) proudly supports the award as a media partner this year too.

Twenty-seven leading figures from a range of disciplines have selected the 47 winners of the 2021 Dezeen Awards from a shortlist of 266 projects and studios. The judges have spent the last few weeks reviewing all the projects on the shortlist online.

The Juries
This year's Architecture Master Jury consists of French architect Lina Ghotmeh, civil engineer Hanif Kara, architect and engineer Cecil Balmond, London-based architect Christina Seiliern, and architects Juliane Wolf of Studio Gang and Noelia Monteiro of Estudio Flume in São Paulo. These industry experts have confirmed the winners in all architectural categories.

London-based architect Ben Allen, Julie Eizenberg of KoningEizenberg Architecture, Amit Gupta of STIR, Petra Blaisse of Dutch studio Inside Outside, South London-based interior designer Alexandria Dauley and interior designer Susie McLaren of SHH have chosen this year’s interiors winners.

Bund Post Office and Shop by Yatofu Creatives

Textile designer Chrissa Amuah, Cape Town-based designer Lukhanyo Mdingi, conceptual material designer Shahar Livne, Dutch designer and innovator Richard Hutten and London-based design curator Jane Withers have decided on this year’s design winners.

Nick Shute of Dodds & Shute, environmental design writer and speaker Katie Treggiden, Seetal Solanki of Ma-tt-er, interior designer Simon Hamilton, Lay Koon Tan of Nature Squarede and Taiwanese architect Arthur Huang have chosen this year's sustainability winners.

Mo de Movimiento by Lucas Muñoz

Filmmaker and visual designer Gary Hustwit, head curator of the Design Museum Priya Khanchandani, graphic designer Micha Weidmann and filmmaker Oliver Manzi have ratified this year’s media winners.

Architecture project category winners
The 11 winning architecture projects for Dezeen Awards 2021 include a clubhouse made of local pine, a cloudlike bamboo canopy and a conference centre with a sinuous roof. Other winners include a preschool that can be dismantled, a timber-framed office building and a warehouse complex with slides and trampolines.

Interiors category winners
The 11 winning interiors projects include an online order collection point in Helsinki, a post office in China, and a bicycle garage in The Netherlands. Other winners include a house for two young musicians in North London, a multi-coloured hotel in central Tokyo and a restaurant in Kyiv made from primarily natural and recycled materials.

Design project category winners
The 11 winning design projects include a puffed-up glass coffee table, a plump duvet-like lounge chair and a pendant light that mimics the sky. Other winners include a collection of hardware turned homeware, a sheltering armchair and a compact wireless breast pump.

Sustainability category winners
The sustainability categories were newly introduced this year to recognise the efforts of architects and designers who are putting sustainability at the forefront of their practice. The three winning sustainability projects for Dezeen Awards 2021 have been revealed as a recycling centre that features 700 repurposed windows, a restaurant made from upcycled junk and a collection of tiles made of glass from discarded microwaves. There were 357 entries for the sustainability categories at this year's Dezeen Awards, 15 of which were shortlisted by a panel of sustainability experts. The Sustainability Master Jury then met virtually to confirm the winners.

Media project category winners
The five winning media projects include an experiential animated website and a render featuring a cascade of flowers. Other winners include a portrait of gridded shadows, a storyteller's virtual viewing room and a glimpse into the daily life of Shangcun village.

Studio winners
The six winning studios for Dezeen Awards 2021 have been revealed, with Neri&Hu named architecture studio of the year and Superflux named design studio of the year. Helsinki firm Fyra scooped the interiors studio of the year prize, while ODDO Architects was named emerging architecture studio of the year, WGNB was named emerging interiors studio of the year and Studio Raw Material was named emerging design studio of the year.
